- 4.0 out of 5 stars from StratCat -- Beautiful but despairing : It's beyond dispute that Richard Powers is an extraordinary writer. He describes the natural world so beautifully that I long to visit the places he describes and join his characters in a tent in the Smokey Mountains, and--as in The Overstory--he argues compellingly that our world is in danger and needs immediate intervention before we lose beauty and meaning we don't realize is around us. His depiction of a widower raising a young boy who's "on the spectrum" is similarly insightful and devastating. [Quick aside: I've read many reviewers who take issue with Theo's parenting decisions, particularly his reluctance to medicate his 8-year-old son. As a clinical psychologist who worked with children and families for years, I both empathize with and understand his struggles and decisions and don't fault him in the slightest] ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from abmatt -- A Counter-Punch to Overstory : Powers is a genius. Where Overstory was epic and diverse, Bewilderment is intimate and concise. Both are amazing, life-altering reads by a brilliant writer. It takes a singular talent to pack astrobiology, neuro-divergence, grief, humor, and love into such a slim capsule that still packs a whollop on every page. I hated the ending, but I understand it. This is an amazing, emotional, resonant, eye-opening novel. Read it and then read it again. I know I will. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Richard Barbieri -- starts well, then turns into a morbid horror story : By trying to combine a family and environmental story with an American political dystopia and take on global catastrophe and an even worse Donald Trump political nightmare, Powers loses all empathy and hope. I only finished it to confirm what a nightmare it is. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Angelo Giacalone -- Not a top shelf : Book did not meet my expectations. Very disappointed. Why the critics think it is so great is beyond me. While on the surface its issues were interesting, sub rosa the book was a pretentious stab about our modern state of ineptitude with ecology and climate change. Sorry but I did not like it very much. And may I add the ending was trite. The more I think about it, and I am NOT trying to be petty or mean, this book in my estimation went for cheap emotion and perhaps to make a buck. Yes I am being judgmental but simply this book was not up to par as some of the critics say it is. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from FitOldDog -- A brilliant ride through space and human emotions. : I really enjoyed this unofficial sequel to "The Overstory," with the author's clearly expressed love of nature, and the importance of protecting all life on Earth. Totally fascinating, and a little heart rending, in a good way. Highly recommended. Kevin Thomas Morgan ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dr sarah skinner -- A hymn to the beauty of nature and people : Oh my goodness just when I was forced to assume the 2021 Booker prize had been a bit of a damp squid along comes the late entry into the ring ,shortlisted before it was even published ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mac McAleer -- An accessible read with deep ideas : This is an enjoyable book. It provided me with a thoughtful story based around a father and his son, what we have done to the planet and especially what we have done to the other life on the planet. I also found the book’s structure and style made it easy to read. My preconceptions of the book were changed on reading it. Promotional material had mentioned the violence of the young boy and of trips to other planets. The mention of violence had initially put me off, but I found that it was only an isolated incident. The trips to other planets suggested a heavy science fiction or fantasy element, but these were mind-trips, created by the boy’s father as bed-time stories (1). - 5.0 out of 5 stars from V. O'Regan -- A powerful work of literary science fiction with compassion : “You know. The mouse, Dad. The mouse.” - from ‘Bewilderment’ by Richard Powers. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 21, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Herman Norford -- A Testament to our Troubled Life and Planet : I am a fan of Richard Powers and have read all 13 of his novels. I feel justified in hailing him, sometime ago, as the greatest living novelist writing in English. Whilst I was pleased to see the long overdue success of the Overstory, I have to admit that I did not really enjoy it. For me, although in a similar vein to the Overstory, Bewilderment is a more engaging story. Having said that Powers great masterpieces are behind him. I am thinking of novels such as: The Gold Bug Variations, Operation Wandering Soul, The Time of Our Singing and The Echo Maker. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from MRS P A Clewett -- Enchanting yet empty space : The book's primary analogy, that the human mind is as vast and complex as the universe, whilst it may be neurologically accurate, doesn't, sadly, reflect the reality of the way most people think and behave. Here the more accurate representative character is probably the un-named but recognisable President, corruption embodied, who is driven only by greed for power, wealth and control. Its second great analogy, that the rape and destruction of that tiny fraction of the universe we call our own is as thoughtless, cruel and self-defeating as the way we interact with one another and, in particular, the way our education systems bludgeon original creativity into tramelled and pointless narrow paths although beautifully and movingly illustrated by the enchanting Robin is in fact denied by the existence of the anonymous narrator and his thousands of co-scientists, all driven by the selfless and endlessly inventive powers that should have been driven out of them by those evil systems.
